Executive Functioning (or E.F.) can be considered the boss of the brain.
It cues us to be:
situationally aware in the present, so that we can take in, and respond to, our environment;
future thinkers so that we can plan for, and work towards, future outcomes.
E.F. isn't something that we 'do' on its own; it is always used to help us do something else, such as academic tasks, social activities, or self-care.
E.F. skills develop throughout the school years
All students are developing their E.F. skills and they are expected to use these developing skills to meet the demands of school.
Development, delay, dysfunction
When a student presents with some sort of behaviour (such as withdrawal, defiance, avoidance) it may be due to a number of reasons including developing, delayed, or dysfunctional executive functioning.
While all school-aged students benefit from E.F. strategies, students with ADHD, developmental language disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or a high IQ may benefit from additional, explicit E.F. support.
When we support the E.F. needs of students, we help them to access and engage in a range of activities.
At The Cognosco Group we believe in supporting the E.F. needs of school-aged students by working directly with students as well as supporting the team around the learner.
Working with students, we can:
increase their awareness of the E.F. system as a whole as well as individual E.F. skills;
help them to understand their own E.F. profile (strengths and goal areas);
explicitly teach E.F. support strategies in individual or small group intervention;
support students to apply learned skills in different contexts (e.g., larger group sizes, varied activities, in the classroom).
Working with the team around the learner, we can:
increase team members' awareness of E.F. including the skills and demands of school;
help to adopt an E.F. lens when viewing student challenges;
identify opportunities for explicit E.F. support;
implement E.F. supports in the classroom setting.
We do this by providing screening, assessment, consultation, coaching, intervention and professional learning.
